The Carl Sandburg Auditorium was filled with students, music, flashing lights and energy Thursday night.

The Phi Beta Sigma fraternity held a dance competition from 7 to 11 p.m.

The event, “Flip the Script,” gathered dance teams from NIU and other universities to compete for the first place prize of $500, with a second place prize of $250.

First place was awarded to NIU’s own FLip Mode, with second place going to House of West, a Chicago based dance team.

Aaron Burden, a junior marketing major and member of Phi Beta Sigma, was excited about the event.

“It was great to give students a good social event and also allow others to express themselves through dance,” Burden said.

Kiowa Howery, Phi Beta Sigma president and a senior family consumer and nutrition science major, wanted to hold the event to see what the result would be if a number of NIU dance teams competed against one another.

“The objective was to compare the group’s styles to see who is the best,” Howery said. “Flip the Script made it easy to judge them side-by-side.”

The show also featured a fashion excerpt featuring members from Present

Perfect Modeling Organization, an NIU modeling organization.

Ashley Washington, a sophomore biology major and PPMO member, enjoyed being part of the show.

“It was exhilarating,” she said. “I had fun. Although I can’t dance, I was able to bring something to the show.”

Overall, Burden was pleased with the outcome of the event.

“It was a real good turnout,” Burden said. “It was the first time we ever did this, but we will definitely do it again.”
