The Blockbuster at 2561 Sycamore Road will be closing its doors for good on Dec. 20.

As a part of the companies nationwide evaluation, which is expected to include the shutting down of over 900 stores, the company has decided to close one of its two Blockbusters located on Sycamore Road.

“Like a lot of retailers we are looking at our store portfolios,” said company spokesman Randy Hargrove. “Retailers that have multiple units are always looking at portfolios to maximize efficiency.”

Hargrove said that the vast majority of stores closing still have stores close enough to provide their service to the community, and DeKalb is no different.

“For the customers of this store, we are making them aware of other ways they can get their videos from Blockbuster,” Hargrove said. “We’ve been offering two week free trial by mail and sign up in store, as well as informing customers of other nearby Blockbuster stores.”

Though Hargrove said that there is a handful of stores that will be closing, he also said that no list can be provided at this time.

“We’re doing a lot of things as a company, we still have thousands of stores,” Hargrove said.

He said that the goal is for Blockbuster to become a multi-platform provider, focusing on their by-mail program, a service where you can download movies directly from your Blu-ray player or TiVo and Blockbuster Express, a DVD vending machine, in addition to their traditional stores.

The Blockbuster that is closing will have a clearance sale that will extend to their final day of operation. According to signs on the windows, all DVD’s will be sold under $9.

“It’s a great opportunity to get cheap movies,” said senior history major Daniel Stuckart.
Hargrove said that the Blockbuster plans on selling all their inventory which includes movies, games, CDs and even light fixtures.

As for employees of the store being closed, Hargrove said that they are currently working on transferring them to other locations.

I was never sure why they needed Blockbuster stores across the street from each other anyway...
