Minutes of NINA Board of Directors Meeting
Aug. 10, 2000
Northern Star office, NIU
Minutes of full board, Aug. 10, 10:15 a.m.
Also attending: Kim Kubiak. No one else, besides executive board. We don't
have a quorum.
Can't approve minutes. We have eight out of 20 board members attending.
NIU report: Lois said that between Jan and Dana, we finally have a handle
on membership and dues. There are more demands on Dana.
NIU journalism camp went well, the best one yet. Jostens had a yearbook
workshop here with 95 kids for 3.5 days. Killam and Self met with them to
get the program name out. Continuing education credits went to eight high
school teachers.
There is an agreement to hire a teacher for the broadcast news position.
Allen May is hired for one-year only. May has a law degree, but no master's
degree and was an anchor and newsroom chief for NBC affiliate in Milwaukee.
Enrollment continues to be strong, growing in broadcast news in particular.
Continued improvement in graphics and photo facilities. New internship coordinator
is Amanda March.
Star Web site gets a lot of attention, it is better than many newspaper
We sites. Job listings site is popular, too.
Contest entries: Don't know yet. Haven't tabulated them.
Bylaws: Because of Nagel's new job, he hasn't had time to work on them.
Killam said he could look at them and make some recommendations, get them
posted the month before so board members can look at them. This was approved
by Cain, Nagel and Etheredge.
Fall conference: Have workshop for college competitors?? Contest will
be $40 for members, $15 for lunch only.
New business: Lonny proposes that we create a new award in the name of
the late Marx Gibson, either national or state, the Mentor Award. Would
go to the person who most helped, the person who gave you the fire in the
belly to be a newsperson. Have a dinner to honor the winner?
High school, college contests: We need help promoting the college contests.
High school contest is still on drawing board. EIU and SIU does high school
contests, as does school press association.
Year 2000 goals. Nagel took a look at how far we've come.
1. Establish a dues structure. Yes.
2. Identify present members, their circulation categories and contact persons
and share that information with all NINA members. Information has not been
shared.
3. Identify potential members. Have done so on newspaper organizations,
haven't done so on associations, individuals, college and high school papers.
4. Design and execute a marketing strategy. We have the strategy, but it's
not being used by all membership committee members.
5. Use exciting programs and seminars as vehicles to attract new members. Yes.
Other goals
1. Encourage more college newspapers to participate in general excellence
contest. We need to get on the stick on this one.
2. Establish a high school newspaper general excellence contest. No.
3. Continue NINA High School Journalist of the year competition, along with
matching funds. Yes.
4. Increase scholarship awards. No.
5. Find new revenue sources. No.
Meeting adjourned about 11:20 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jan Larsen,
Secretary
