About Neil Hopp
Neil Hopp is managing editor/training and development for The Northwest
Herald, a 36,000-circulation newspaper in Crystal Lake. He is the newspaper's
writing coach, coordinates all internal and external training activities,
does a daily critique, publishes a weekly staff newsletter on writing and
coordinates the newsroom's enterprise reporting projects.
He teaches writing and coaching seminars for Shaw Newspapers at its Institute
for Excellence in Dixon, and recently taught reporting skills for the Michigan
Press Association.
He is a 1967 graduate of Central Michigan University. Hopp began his career
as a reporter and then editor in Mount Pleasant, Mich. He was managing editor
of daily newspapers in Carlisle, Penn., and Twin Falls, Idaho, and was publisher
of The Leader in Corning, N.Y., for 14 years.
