In brief

Narrative writing takes center stage

On April 27 at NIU, Gina Barton of the Indianapolis Star and Tim Harmon of the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune will headline a NINA spring conference that focuses on narrative news writing.
The two will talk about storytelling techniques used in Barton's "Justice for Becky," a landmark 1999 project in the South Bend Tribune.
Watch for conference details in the next NINA newsletter and here on the Web site.

Scholarships earmarked for high-school journalists

NINA will award $600 in scholarships this spring to high-school seniors looking to pursue careers in journalism.
Materials have been mailed to northern Illinois high schools. Newspapers are asked to remind your local high school journalism and/or English programs about these scholarships and encourage students to apply.
Scholarship amounts are: $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. Often in the past, winning students' local newspapers have matched the NINA awards to double the scholarship amounts.

Best-clip contest launched for college journalists

After a successful "best clip" contest last fall, NINA is adding a second version, this one for journalists at college newspapers across Illinois. The entry fee is $5 and the postmark deadline is March 9.
